Along with his work in eco-friendly building and planning practices, Christopher Milam has also dedicated time to increasing efforts towards the growth of renewable community gardens to help communities thrive both socially and environmentally.
Plants and gardens provide many benefits to society, enhancing the fresh air we breathe in everyday and producing healthy food for our families, along with other aesthetically pleasing features.
A community garden is typically defined as any piece of land where individuals and groups of people can go to grow plants, fruits, and vegetables in a shared space. Not only do these gardens produce fresh foods to feed our families, they also provide a strong sense of community and a connection with our environment, leading to an overall neighborhood improvement.
Throughout his eco-friendly building and planning work, Christopher Milam has come across various community garden projects in urban areas, designed to preserve natural areas and amplify the beauty of industrialized city streets. Some only grow flowers while others feed entire neighborhoods that might otherwise lack access to fresh produce. No matter their size or function however, all community gardens hold a meaningful purpose within the community.
Holding a high importance for community involvement, Christopher Milam has supported a variety of nonprofit organizations focused on providing assistance to low-income families, children’s groups, and other community groups through these gardens. One group in particular is Growing Gardens.
Over the last two decades, Growing Gardens has made a lasting impact on the local community providing nutrition education, gardening, and produce donations to over 136,000 individuals. Their mission is to get all people involved in growing and cooking their own food, regardless of their ages, background, income levels, or abilities in order to enhance food security and hunger relief within the community as a whole.
Along with the aesthetic and eco-friendly aspects of community gardens, these green areas have also been shown to provide safer living spaces with decreased crime and vandalism. Through his work in community gardens, Christopher Milam hopes to continue to make a positive impact on the community and the surrounding environment while providing unique, sustainable solutions to the many different challenges our society faces now and in the years to come.
